Just a quick note:
For those of you who may be unfamiliar with the ins and outs of government funding for community-based HIV prevention, I just wanted to note that when we travel to conferences like USCA or HPLS, it is paid for (and usually requires as a part of our grant) by the federal government. These meetings provide a connection point between researches and community activists, allowing those of us working in the field to have the latest information about prevention-related behavioral science. They also help small CBO’s like BEAT AIDS to connect and build coalitions with similar organizations fighting HIV across the U.S.
As always, money that is raised from our community (through events like the Disco Ball or the Charity Banquet, as well as through the generousity of our individual and organizational supporters) stays in our community. Every dollar we receive from San Antonio is used to provide services directly to the people of San Antonio. We wouldn’t have it any other way!
Yours in the struggle,
Kevin Baker
