HIV is a national emergency.

• Every 9 1/2 minutes (on average), someone in the United States is infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
• In 2006, and estimated 56,300 people became infected with HIV.
• More than 1 million people in the US are living with HIV.
• Of those 1 million people living with HIV, 1 in 5 do not know that they are infected.
• Despite new therapies, people with HIV still develop AIDS.
• Over 1 million people in the US have been diagnosed with AIDS.
• More than 14,000 people with AIDS still die each year in the US.

Anyone can get HIV

HIV infects men and women, gay, straight and bisexual, Black, Latino, white — anyone can get HIV.  With the current increase in new cases among women of color and young gay men, it’s time for everyone – even in communities that may never have thought of HIV as “our problem” before – to join the fight against HIV and AIDS.

No one has to get HIV

HIV is a completely preventable infection.  For yourself, your family and your community, take these six steps to BEAT AIDS:

• Get educated: learn what HIV is, and how it is transmitted.
• Get aware: understand your own personal risk for HIV.
• Get tested: get the test so you can know for sure.
• Get treated: if you’re HIV-positive, early treatment will extend your life and reduce the risk of transmitting the virus to others.
• Get safe: learn how to protect yourself and loved ones.
• Get loud!  Don’t let our government look the other way while our communities are decimated!  Demand that your elected officials make HIV prevention, treatment and research a priority, so we can see the end of AIDS in our lifetime
